A new Jewish society whose purpose it will be to spur the Polish Jewish masses to engage in productive occupations and to prevent the alarming increase in the number of pauperized Jews in Poland, has recently been organized in Warsaw. Waclaw Wiszlicki, Jewish member of the Polish parliament, is among the founders of the society, which calls itself “Productivizierung.”
The society intends to create five departments: 1) a branch which will propagate the idea of Polish Jews engaging in agriculture, gardening, dairying, etc., in the neighborhood of the cities and towns where they now live. 2) a section for the purpose of creating new industries in the provinces, where wages are low and where Jewish entrepeneurs will be able to stand the competition. For this purpose popular courses will be established and instructors will be sent to help in the development of small domestic industry; 3) a section whose purpose will be to train Jewish craftsmen and petty traders so that they can adapt themselves to modern industrial technique; 4) an emigration section to encourage the emigration of elements who are prepared to engage in agricultural work; 5) a section for financing the Jewish economic life of Poland. For this purpose the society plans to raise a great loan from among Polish Jews themselves for purposes of Jewish economic reconstruction in the country.
The society also plans to appeal to Jewry abroad to help it in an undertaking which it describes as an effort to save Polish Jewry from complete ruin.
