Louis Lipsky, former president of the Zionist Organization of America, was brought back to organized Zionist work through his election as president of the New York Zionist region at a meeting held on Sunday at the Hotel New Yorker. The meeting passed resolutions to ignore the Passfield White Paper on Palestine and to go forward with increased fervor with practical work in Palestine. Another resolution called for a postponement of the World Zionist Congress until such a time as the negotiations now in progress between the Jewish Agency and the British government are completed.
A resolution mourning the death of Lord Melchett said, “The passing of Lord Melchett deprives the Zionist movement of a leader who was courageous and unequivocal in championing the Jewish cause in Palestine. What drew him to Zionism was its appeal to the Jew in him, an appeal which had its roots in self-respect and self-preservation. At this hour when strong and militant voices are needed to speak the principles of Zionism, the absence of Lord Melchett will be extremely saddening.”
FISHMAN APPEALS
The return of Louis Lipsky to the Zionist organization followed an appeal made to him by Jacob Fishman, editor of the Jewish Morning Journal, and Maurice Samuel, Zionist author, to accept the new post. Other speakers at the meeting were Abraham Goldberg, Bernard A. Rosenblatt, Harry J. Kahn, Morris Kramer, Robert Szold, Jacob de Haas, and Morris Margulies.
One of the resolutions called for a “large and immediate increase in the membership of the Zionist Organization of America.” The “enrollment of shekel-payers into the Zionist movement in numbers that will truly represent the great mass of Jewry upon whom the Zionist foundation rests” was urged in order that the delegates at the coming Zionist Congress might speak in the names of “hundreds of thousands of Jews who have registered their affiliation to the Zionist cause.”
The meeting passed a resolution welcoming the arrival of Menahem Ussishkin, president of the Jewish National Fund, and another resolution in support of the institutions devoted to reconstruction work, such as the Palestine Foundation Fund and the Jewish National Fund. “Our aim must be to colonize more thousands of Jews and to acquire more thousands of dunams of land,” they stated.
Morris Margulies, secretary of the New York region, said of Mr. Lipsky, “American Zionists have often had occasion to acknowledge Louis Lipsky as their greatest inspiration. His yielding to us in our insistence that only he could provide the leadership which would make New York Zionism an adequate reflection of the two million Jews who live here is but another instance of his willingness always to make sacrifices for the movement.”
