The Administration of the Palestine Jewish National Council (Vaad Leumi) had an audience this morning with the High Commissioner, Sir John Chancellor, at which it raised the question of security in the country, in the light of the Yadjur outrage.
The police are prepared to offer a substantial reward for information leading to the arrest of the murderers, the J.T.A. understands. So far the efforts to track them down have been unsuccessful, although the Sheiks and Mukhtars of the neighbouring villages have all been closely interrogated. Colonel Mavrogordato, the Chief of the Palestine Police Force, has personally taken charge the investigations.
All the Hebrew papers demand swift Government action. The Revisionist daily, the “Haam”, urges that the Arab wire-pullers should be punished because the outrage is due to their incitement. The “Haaretz” says that the citizens of the country have no faith in the will or ability of the Government to suppress criminality and incitement, so long as the Arab press is allowed to go on engaging in uncontrolled incitement. How can the sense of security in Palestine be restored when the murderers of Yadjur can commit their crime and get away without the authorities being able to find any trace of them, the Hebrew Labour daily “Davar” asks.
Various theories are prevalent regarding the motive behind the outrage, that most widely held being that either Arab politicians or Communists hired a terrorist gang of expert shots to shoot down a party of Jews, in order to stir up new trouble in Palestine.
