Thousands of people were present to-day at the Willesden Jewish Cemetery for the funeral of “Solly” Joel, the diamond multi-millionaire who died here last week. Special police were called to control the crowds. The service was conducted by the Rev. Ephraim Levine, assisted by the Rev. I. Goldston. The Kaddish was recited by Mr. J. B. Joel, a brother, and Mr. Joel’s two sons. Sir David Harris, Sir Edward Davis, Sir Hugo Hirst, Mr. Albert de Courville, Sir Walter de Frece, M.P., Sir Arthur Griffith-Boscawen, Sir A. Bailey, Sir A. Bailey, Sir Harry McGowan, Sir G. Oppenheimer, Lord Lurgan, Lord Waring and the Countess of Birkenhead were among those present, and Lord Beaverbrook and Lord Lonsdle sent wreaths.
Mr. Joel had been a member for forty years of the New West-end Synagogue in Bayswater, to which two years ago he and his brother, Mr. J. B. Joel, presented the marble wall, and in 1894, on the death of their father, gave the Minister’s seat. A memorial service was held at the synagogue this evening, the memorial address being delivered by the Rev. Ephraim Levine.
