The government of the Dutch East Indies has appointed F. C. van Lier mayor of Cheribou, a city on the Dutch island of Java, according to word received here today from Batavia, the capital of Java. Van Lier, who is an engineer and president of the Cheribou Association for Jewish Affairs, is the first Jew to hold the office of mayor in the Dutch East Indies.
