The legal status of the Jews as a national minority will be changed in Turkey, in accordance with a new law which is now being prepared by the Turkish Ministry of the Interior, it became known to-day.
According to an announcement made to-day by the Ministry of the Interior, the law will have to establish the actual rights of the national minorities in Turkey and of their institutions. This is the first time in the history of Turkey that such a law is being considered. Hitherto there were no laws in the country regulating the national minority question.
In connection with the promulgation of the new law, the status of the Jews, it is foreseen, will be changed for the better. Up till now the religious interests of the Jews were guided exclusively by the law which was issued in 1864 by Sultan Abdul Medjid. This law dealt with the functions of the Chief Rabbinate of Turkey and is not at all applicable to the present situation in Turkey.
