Acting under the provisions of the new Government Ordinance which prohibits the Jewish Communities from making grants to any institutions which are not of a religious character, the District Governor of Vilna has struck out from the budget of the Vilna Jewish Community subsidies which it had decided to make to the Hebrew Studio Theatre in Vilna, the Vilna Yiddish Theatre, the Yiddish Scientific Institute, which has its headquarters in Vilna, the Vilna Jewish Musical Institution, the Vilna group of the Jewish sports organisation Maccabee, and the Vilna Gemilas Chesed Kassa, or Jewish relief and credit bank, explaining that they are not religious institutions.
