The first two trials in connection with the anti-Jewish excesses which occurred in Vilna on November 10th. were held to-day, the accused being a 24 year old Jewish shopkeeper named Karpel Gelfer, who was charged with having incited Jews on the day of the excesses to take revenge on the hooligans who had attacked them, and a municipal official named Ignacy Karpowicz, who was charged with smashing three windows in a Jewish shop.
Gelfer was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment less three weeks, which he has already served while awaiting trial, and Karpowicz was acquitted.
There are about 40 trials pending, arising out of the Vilna excesses.
