The construction of 180 workmen’s houses on the Haifa Bay land of the Jewish National Fund is making rapid progress, and £35,000 has already been invested in the work. The buildings will accommodate mostly Jewish railway workers, and the neighbourhood is therefore being built in the vicinity of the Government Central Railway Workshops.
Climatically and hygienically the conditions are stated to be excellent. There is no danger of malaria, and the drinking water is excellent. The Palestine Electric Corporation has already installed wires for lighting the quarter. The railway line passes through the quarter.
Each householder receives one dunam of fenced land. Each house will contain 2 rooms, kitchen and terrace and conveniences. The planting of a garden is obligatory.
The partners in this enterprise are the Jewish National Fund, which provided the land, the Palestine Mortgage and Credit Bank, which advanced £20,000 in first building mortgages, the Palestine Emergency Fund which made a £7,500 loan, the houseowners themselves, who provided £7,200, the Mortgage Bank, which provided a loan of £1,000 for water supply.
The construction of the new quarter is one of the features of the present development activity in the neighbourhood of the new Haifa harbour.
