The day before the pogrom broke out in Salonica, in which the Campbell Jewish quarter was burnt down, the Governor-General of Salonica, M. Gonatas, assured the Prime Minister, M. Venizelos, in reply to enquiries made of him in view of the violent anti-Jewish agitation that was being carried on in the city, that there would be no disturbances, Senator Asher Mallah, the Jewish representative from Salonica in the Greek Senate, who is the President of the Zionist Federation in Greece, revealed when he gave evidence to-day before the law court at Verria, where a number of the instigators and participants in the pogrom are now standing their trial.
Senator Mallah said that after the fire which had destroyed the Campbell quarter, he had gone there with Governor-General Gonatas, and he described to the court the scenes of davastation he had witnessed, and how he had seen charred and bloodstained fragments of Scrolls of the Law lying about, which had been taken by the vandals out of the synagogues and desecrated.
He was convinced, Senator Mallah said, that the pogrom was the work of the Greek Macedonian Nationalist Organisation.
