The Nazi fraction has introduced a motion into the Prussian Diet which, if adopted would make it illegal for any actors or actresses to be engaged to play at any State theatre unless they can prove that they are of “pure German origin”, meaning that they have no Jewish blood. Existing agreements with actors or actresses who are not of purely German “origin” must not be renewed, and no new agreements may be entered into with them.
The resolution would also give power to the Prussian Diet to prevent the performance of plays which are judged to be “anti-National” or pacifist, or written by people who are “anti-national”.
The press of the #eft declares that the directors of certain State theatres in the provincial parts of Germany are already refusing to confirm the engagements of their actors and actresses unless they can produce proof that they are not Jewish. The directors claim that they are compelled to do this under the pressure of public opinion.
In all these cases, the papers point out, the theatres in question are State subsidised out of the revenue contributed by the taxation of all citizens.
