The Ministry of Education of Esthonia today approved the establishment of a Jewish Chair planned by Dorpat University as part of its tercentenary celebration.
The chair is to be part of the Philosophic Faculty of the University which is a state institution. Dorpat University thus becomes the first University in Europe where Yiddish and Hebrew Literature will be taught as part of the course for the doctorate degree.
The chair is to be maintained by Friends of Dorpat University for the Promotion of Jewish Science.
Dorpat University has been noted for its liberal traditions for a long period and during the Czarist regime supplied a refuge to Russian Jews unable to secure an education in Russian Universities.
