Premier Edouard Herriot, replying to a memorandum submitted to him recently by the League to Combat Anti-Semitism regarding the recent anti-Semitic outbreaks in Tunisia stated that the authorities may be relied upon to prevent a recurrence of the anti-Jewish incidents.
“You may rely upon the authorities to prevent new outbreaks which were inspired by propagandists who took advantage of the economic difficulties,” the French Premier asserted.
At the same time he advises the League “to use also your influence to advise the Jews to avoid every imprudence which is essential in an atmosphere where religious hatred is easily awakened.
“The Jews should avoid every manifestation which may appear to be directed against the Moslem religion.”
Premier Herriot stated that the Resident General in Tunis dissuaded a Keren Hayesod delegate, Halpern, from addressing a Zionist meeting in Tunis in order to avoid trouble that seemed certain to ensue.
