Berlin (Sep. 16)
Negotiations were inaugurated today with the police department by the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith and the Federation of Jewish Communities to protect the synagogues throughout Germany during the High Holydays.
Last year, for the first time in the history of Berlin, worshippers were attacked on the Jewish New Year as they were leaving synagogue services.
The police department suggested that policemen in civilian attire be stationed at the synagogues in order not to attract attention. This method would be similar to that employed for the protection of diplomatic buildings.
This proposal was accepted by the Jewish representatives. The details alone now remain to be settled.
