The American branch of the Yiddish Scientific Institute of Vilna, international clearing house for information pertaining to Jewish life and culture, concluded its three-day sessions at the Central Plaza on Sunday evening.
The American branch of the Institute, which has been functioning for six years, reported an increase in membership in the past year, and now has a total of 194 members.
Efforts to expand the activities of the Institute and to secure wider support for its work will be undertaken in accordance with a resolution adopted at the sessions.
The conference was addressed by a group of men prominent in Yiddish culture in this country. Dr. Max Weinreich, chief secretary of the Institute in Vilna, here for a year’s stay in connection with the Yale seminar, was a guest of honor at the sessions.
Speakers at the conference and at the banquet on Saturday evening included Ab. Cahan, editor of the Jewish Daily Forward; Dr. Chaim Zhitlowsky, Dr. J. Shatsky, Dr. A. Bloch, S. Niger and L. Lehrer.
Intensive research work to compile data on the life of Jews in America with particular reference to the history of East European Jews in this country, will be undertaken.
It is hoped that the American branch may be able to arrange scholarships for research work in Vilna.
