“One of the results of the depression has been the lapping off of unnecessary activities. In every factory, store and institution, this has been going on for three years. There is, of course, a great danger involved in retrenchment—the danger of going too far. Whatever is to be saved of the institutional life of America must be won by supreme effort. If we wish to lay the foundation for recovery, we must not neglect to honor the religion which has been our solace and guide.”

This was the message of Ludwig Vogelstein, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, as he issued the call for the sixth consecutive Union Tour. This Tour of the Congregations of the Union is conducted annually for the purpose of strengthening organized Judaism in the United States.
