The president of the municipality of Lemberg today rejected a request for municipal compensation for the damages wrought to Jewish stores during anti-Jewish student excesses here last week.
The request for compensation was submitted by a Jewish delegation, who pointed out that among the sufferers are the poorest elements who are unable to make the repairs necessary before their stores can be re-opened, unless they receive financial assistance.
The municipal head pointed out that the law does not make the municipality responsible for damages sustained during street disturbances. He advised the delegation to approach the groups directly responsible for the havoc wrought.
A delegation of Jewish deputies has already approached the District Governor with a request that compensation be paid out to the victims of the attasks which occurred on the anniversary of the death of the Christian student, Stansilas Waclawski, killed during the anti-Semitic excesses in Vilna last November.
