The recall of George S. Messersmith, American Consul General in Berlin, for the questioning tactics employed before Professor Albert Einstein could be granted a visa to the United States, is demanded in a resolution adopted by a group of leading women, meeting in the home of Mrs. Gerard Swope.
“We protest in the name of the intelligent American people against the action of the State Department in forwarding to the consulate in Berlin the absurd document of a so-called patriotic society in reference to the admission of Professor Einstein as a Communist,” says the resolution.
“We ask the recall of George S. Messersmith, Consul General in Berlin because of his ignorance. By his treatment of the distinguished scientist, Messersmith has humiliated America and made it a laughing stock second only to the Scopes trial in Tennessee. Every intelligent person in the world knows that Communists and pacifists differ fundamentally. Communists believe violence has its place as a political method. Pacifists believe that use of force is always a mistake.”
