Two thousand Jews emigrated from Salonica in 1932 owing to the present economic crisis and Salonica’s inability to support her population, according to figures published in an article by the former Governor General of Salonica, Senator Achille Calevras.
The majority of the Jews settled in Palestine. Senator Calevras predicts that the emigration in 1933 will be even larger.
Eight thousand Armenians left Greece in 1932, 2,500 of them coming from Salonica.
The situation in Salonica is ascribed in part to the world crisis and in part to the large influx of Greek refuges from Asia Minor.
