The Jews of the world were urged to stand united in the face of present conditions, particularly in Germany, by Isadore Apfel, grand master of the Independent Order Brith Abraham, at a testimonial dinner in his honor given on Sunday evening at the Hotel Astor.
More than 1,000 persons attended the dinner. Addresses were delivered by Mayor O’Brien, Leon Sanders, Chairman of the Dinner Committee; Borough President Samuel Levy, Judge Gustave Hartman, former Congressman Nathan Perlman, Max L. Hollander, Grand Secretary of the Order; Max Silverstein, former Grandmaster, and Magistrate Adolph Stern, as well as the guest of honor.
Referring to the situation of the Jews in Germany, particularly in the light of Adolph Hitler’s chancellorship, Mr. Apfel declared: “Conditions affecting Jewry throughout the world at the present time, particularly in Germany, compel us to stand together as our forefathers have done during the twenty-five centuries or more to retain their faith and identity.”
A message was received from Governor Lehman, lauding the Order of which he is a member. “The Independent Order Brith Abraham, to which you and I have the honor to belong, is one of the important links in our social life, “Governor Lehman wrote. “It has served as a great medium in furthering American and Jewish ideals.”
Mayor O’Brien pleaded for religious tolerance and lauded the Jews for their “marvelous strides in the fields of the arts and other endeavors.”
He also lauded the order for raising a fund to provide fifty scholarships in Yeshiva College.
