A five day campaign for $35,000 to meet the deficit of the Jacob H. Schiff Center in the Bronx, established a decade ago, as a memorial to the great Jewish philanthropist, whose name it bears, was launched on Sunday evening at a dinner, attended by 250 persons.
Addresses were delivered by M. Maldwin Fertig, Bernard S. Deutsch, president of the American Jewish Congress and Sol M. Stroock.
An address prepared by Dr. John H. Finley of the New York Times was read by Mr. Fertig.
Messages of felicitation on the tenth anniversary of the center were received from President Hoover, Governor Lehman and Mrs. Jacob H. Schiff.
Dr. Finley described the late Jacob H. Schiff as “a modern patriarch whom one can, in all reverence, put beside those who walked close to their God in the ancient days.”
Mr. Stroock said that Mr. Schiff was “one of the greatest citizens of the United States and beyond doubt the greatest Jew who ever lived in this country.”
Mr. Deutsch stated that racial prejudice has yet to be overcome and that organizations such as the Schiff Center are needed to strengthen Jewish youth.
