According to official statistics published here, there were in Lithuania at the commencement of the present school year—1932-1933—in all the specifically governmental high schools, 8,529 scholars. Of these, 528 were Jews, who lead all the minority nationalities. There are only 175 Russians, 122 Germans, 22 Poles, 35 Letts and 4 students belonging to other nationalities. The overwhelming number, 7,565, are, of course, Lithuanians.
It is also revealed that there is a much smaller proportion of Jews in the so-called private schools. Of the 3,228 pupils in these schools there are only 212 Jews.
Apart from these institutions there are also the exclusively Jewish high schools maintained wholly by Jews in which there are 2,812 pupils, including one non-Jew.
In the aggregate there are in all the Lithuanian high schools, including a number of professional and trade schools, 10,848 Lithuanians, 3,787 Jews, 641 Poles, 387 Russians, 319 Germans, 40 Letts and 40 belonging to various nationalities.
