In spite of his refusal to stand for election, Asher Mallah, prominent in the Salonica Jewish community and a leading Zionist, has been appointed to head the Venizelos list for the forthcoming general elections. As was previously announced, Mallah had refused to stand for election, but his party has been enabled to put his name on the list by the fact that the election regulations empower the various parties to appoint candidates even without their consent. The second Venizelos candidate is Aron Shaky.
Under the present election regulations, a separate Jewish electoral college has been set up, entitling the Jewish community to two parliamentary seats. There are also two Jews on the Tsoldarist list, ex-Deputy Daniel Allalouf and David Alhanti. In addition there are several Jewish independent candidates. It is believed, however, that by the time of the elections on March 5th, the independents will withdraw, leaving the field clear for a direct contest among the National parties.
Although there is a general Jewish desire for a single Jewish list which would obviate Jews being drawn into the political strife, success has not hitherto attended efforts in this direction.
