Fulfilling a promise he had made a few months ago under unusual circumstances, Rabbi Irving F. Reichert of Temple Emanu-El officiated here at the funeral of Colonel Charles E. Stanton, world war hero. It was Colonel Stanton who led the first American forces into France and spoke the memorable words, “Lafayette, we are here.”

Several months ago both Colonel Stanton and Rabbi Reichert officiated at the funeral of their mutual friend, Louis Sloss, San Francisco capitalist. So impressed was the colonel, a non-Jew, with the service of the rabbi that he asked, “When I go will you conduct my funeral, rabbi?” Rabbi Reichert agreed to.
