Bernard Semel, honorary secretary of the Jewish Education Association of New York, declared that the NRA, in establishing a five-day week, has made possible the restoration of the Sabbath as a “great spiritual force” among the masses of American Jews.

In his statement Mr. Semel urges American Jewry to utilize the opportunity to cure the rift which the failure to observe the Sabbath has created between the home and the religious school. Cooperation between home and school for the spiritual welfare of the child is dependent on the restoration of the Sabbath to its rightful place in the Jewish home.

“The ‘new deal’ in which we are launched,” says Mr. Semel, “has become the hope of America. For the American Jew, the new conditions governing industry and employment have a special significance. The ‘new deal’ promises a new lease of life to American Judaism, for it promises an opportunity to restore the Jewish Sabbath — the most important institution of Jewish faith. It offers, also, an opportunity to revitalize American Jewish education.”
