The question of Nazi agitation in the province of Quebec, coupled with the anti-Semitic agitation that is being carried on by a number of French-Canadian publications, has again been brought into the limelight by a series of recent events.
One is the rumored presence here of Heinz Spanknoebel, former United States representative of the Nazi Foreign Propaganda Bureau and leader of the League of Friends of New Germany, who recently disappeared from New York.
It is intimated that the local German consulate is serving as a hideout for the Hitlerist agent. The German Consul, Dr. L. Kempff, would have warmly received him to his bosom because the consul was an early convert to the Nazi cause.
Only a few days ago the Consul gave vent to his feelings when he openly boasted that President von Hindenburg “saved” Germany for the fourth time when he asked Hitler to take the chancellorship in his “strong hands”. The German Harmonia Club serves as the headquarters of the Friends of New Germany, which is fathered by the Consul, and the swastika, National Socialist emblem, holds a prominent place among the decorations of the club.
The swastika serves the local Nazis not only for inside display but also for defacing the fronts of Jewish stores. Recently the store proprietors in the Atwater market were amazed to find the sign of the swastika painted on their store fronts. A fast-drying brand of good red paint was used and one store was selected for special designation. Above the sign of the swastika was the name “Hitler” written in large bold letters. The Nazi sign-painters seem to have worked without the interference of the watchman who is supposed to be on guard at the building or of the policeman on the beat. The police have been investigating but have not yet been able to trace the perpetrators of the acts.
