Viscount Cecil of Chelwood agreed today to remain as chairman of the governing body of the autonomous body, created by the League of Nations, to handle the German refugee problem, and also to head the permanent executive committee of the autonomous body. The small executive committee decided upon will contain representatives of France, Switzerland, Great Britain, Holland and Uruguay.
Lord Cecil’s decision to accept the chairmanship of the autonomous body, comes after he had previously refused to accept the responsibility, because of the press of other work.
The advisory committee to the autonomous body, which meets this afternoon, will probably agree to include eight Jewish organizations in its own membership, it was learned. The decision of the advisory body is in accordance with the desire expressed by the recent London conference for the relief of German Jews, that more Jewish organizations be included in the advisory body, in view of the fact that the task of raising money for the refugee work would, in the main, fall upon Jewish organizations. Originally it had been planned to include only three Jewish organizations. The eight organizations to be invited will be chosen from the list submitted by the London conference. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, it is reported, formerly had opposed this action.
Three Jewish representatives will be elected by the advisory committee to seats on the governing body. However, they will not have the power to vote. The Jewish Agency for Palestine, the Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Colonization Association are to have the seats on the governing body.
Dr. Alberto Guani, Uruguayan diplomat and jurist, and at present Uruguayan Minister to France, was elected vice-chairman of the autonomous body.
