From truck to keelson the S.S. Emanuel, now resting at anchor in Clarke’s Wharf, is a Jewish ship.
The steamer is owned by the Palestinian company Houpia and is manned by a Jewish crew. Its personnel consists of three Palestinians, including the captain, two Austrian Jews, one German Jew and a Dutch Jew. The last four were dismissed from German steamship companies because of their faith and were employed on the S.S. Emanuel because they were Jews.
The vessel is schooner-rigged and weighs 200 tons. She carries an auxiliary motor. Wind and weather permitting, her maximum speed is from ten to twelve knots.
Mezuzoth have been affixed to the doors leading into the cabins. The kitchen is 100 percent kosher. All of the Jewish holidays are observed.
The future trading route of the vessel will take it to Egypt, Syria and Cyprus. The vessel will then proceed to Palestine.
