Gustavo Baroso, Brazilian writer and historian, was forced to resign from his post as president of the Academy of Brazil because he recently became the leader of the local Fascists, known here as “Integralists”.
In a recent interview Senor Baroso expressed opinions contrary to the liberal ideas held by most members of the academy, made fun of the Brazilian ideals of freedom and liberalism, and opposed various members of the academy. As a result, his resignation was requested.
Nazi activities are gaining ground here. Winter relief collections are made everywhere, the picture of the “Leader” is being sold in meeting halls and other public places, and the newspapers continue their scurrilous attacks upon Jews.
One such attack, in Critica, a Sao Paulo paper, charged the Jews with selling Brazilian gold abroad. Another, Seculo, also of Sao Paulo, asserted that Civilization, the newspaper edited by the liberal Dr. Silveiro Bueno, spreads Communist propaganda. Civilization, a Jewish-Portuguese publication, numbers among the members of its staff prominent non-Jewish journalists. Critica in its attack upon Civilization called Dr. Bueno “an ugly Jew.”
