Activities of American Jewish Woman in Social, Communal, Religious Aspects

Coincident with President Roosevelt’s birthday, the annual convention and luncheon of the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations takes place on January 30 at the Hotel Astor, with the Hon. Henry Morgenthan, former Ambassador to Turkey, addressing the gathering on “The Birthday of the President.”

The morning session of the convention will be devoted to a symposium on, “problems in this era of readjustment and how the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations is helping to meet them.” Reports will be given by the four divisions-social, service, health, education and religion-on activities of the year. WOR will broadcast the afternoon proceedings.

Among the guests of honor will be Mrs. Clarence Bachrach, Hon. Richard Washburn Child, Milton J. Cross, Hon. and Mrs. Bernard S. Deutsch, Edwin Franko Goldman, Mrs. Herbert S. Goldstein, Arthur Guiterman, Richard Halliburton, General James G. Harbord, Gabriel Heatter, Harry Hershfield, Judge Anna Moscowtz Kross, Juge Irving Lehman, Mrs. Max L. Levenson, Dr. Solomon Lowenstein, Mrs. Malcolm Parker MacCoy, Mrs. Albert J. May, Mrs. William Brown Meloney, Robert Nathan, Miss Emma Dot Partridge, Miss Lena Madesin Phillips, Jack Pearl, Samuel Rothafel (Roxy), Mrs. Belle Sessler, Mr. and Mrs. Friedrich Schorr and the Hon. Meier Steinbrink.

ANTI-NAZI BOYCOTT

Women of the west Bronx recently organized for the anti-Nazi boycott. The organization, of which Mrs. Louis Myers is chairman, is affiliated with the women’s division of the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League to Champion Human Rights. At a meeting at the home of the chairman, the group unanimously pledged itself to boycott German goods.

NATIONAL COUNCIL

To the ninth annual conference on the “Cause and Cure of War,” held in Washington last week, came fifty-nine representatives of the National Council of Jewish Women.

Outstanding among the representatives was Miss Cecelia Razosky. At a hearing before the House Committee, January 11, she was principal witness. Miss Razovsky gave testimony about the exploitation of aliens applying for naturalization. The Dickstein Bill reducing naturalization fees by one half was approved by the House Committee. It also approved a suggestion made by Miss Razovsky to limit attorneys’ fees in naturalization cases to $25.

On Friday, January 12, an executive committee meeting of the National Council of Jewish Women was visited by James G. McDonald, High Commissioner for the German Refugees. Mr. McDonald reported on the condition of Jewish German refugees, and discussed the problems of the Jew in Germany.

CITE PALESTINE UPLIFT

Guest speaker at the Women’s League for Palestine luncheon. Rabbi William Rosenbloom of Temple Israel, stressed the importance of cooperation and united effort in building a National Homeland.

Gratification at the strides the organization has made since its inception six years ago was expressed by Mrs. Richard Gottheil, honorary president. The home for girls which the League erected and maintains in Haifa serves a vital purpose in affording shelter, training courses and employment for immigrant girls, she declared.

Cantor Jassinovsky and Miss Dvora Lapson, interpreter of Palestinian folk dances, entertained after lunch.

CHINESE TEA

A Chinese tea will be held Saturday evening, January 27, in the Vestry Hall of Temple Sinai, Arlington Avenue and Bradford Street, Brooklyn. The Sisterhood is directing arrangements.
