Debating Youth Leaps to Shadchan’s Defense

A group of young people in Brooklyn have leaped to the defense of the apparently oudated shadchan, or marriage broker, and indidated that they needed his servces as much as had their elders.

They argued that if more than 100,000 women today seek the services of matrimonial bureaus it demonstrates that we still neeed the shadchan.

If dates are arranged at colleges for small fees, if indicates that the functions of thematrimonial agency are not a thing of the past, they contended.

And if one of the minor sources of Yiddish newpaper income is in matrimonial advertisements, that proves that there is still plenty of room for the shadchan.

This defense occurred at the Flatbush Jewish Center during a debate on th question, That Shadchonis is Beneficial. the debate Was condidered a draw, the applause on each sede being so equally deiveded.

The Young People’s League of Temple Beth-El of Mannattan Beach upheld the affirmative, while the young people of Flathush argured the negative.

HAIL SHADEHONIS

Defending Shadchonis Mr. Davidson said that the marriage broker, with hsi long established historical past, has been beneficial to Jewish history. Eliezer established the practice when he found a wife for Isaac the son of Abraham. he also stated that the Shadchan as a disinterested party, is often the best judge in the matter.

Sylvia Gordon on the negative, presented her remarks in rhyme. She said:

“I’ll now paint a picture of th marriage broker, (May he grow broke and brokr)

Who acts as a commercial interferer, whose motive is money when it should be sincerer.

He seals up a marriage and coleets his money, And assures you he got you th best, a honey. And after you’ve gone, zull de teivel em nemmon, He laughs, becaus he knows that he sold you a lemon.

I heard of another that to me is still worse, For a life wothout slumber is a pitiful curse. The broker in question was a bit short of cash. Mating a woman who slept rather light. With a man who snore loudly all thru the night.

Shadchonis is Hiterism in the land of romance, and of course with Herr Hitler we don’t stand a chance. so of you’re alone and want a copanion for life; If you are longing for a huband or wife, Don’t go to a broker, he’ll fool you, I say. Put an ad in the paper-it’s cheaper that way,”

HITLER’S ATTIUDE TOWARD RELIGION CALLED ECONOMIC

“In my opinion Hitler’s attitude toward religion is determined an motivated more by economic than spiritual issues,” declared Dr. Albert Brandt at a forum of the Brooklyn Jewish Center.

Concering th sterilization law Dr. Brandt said that he did not think it would be used against the Jews because the “National Socialist party is being too closely watched by the rest of the world.” Dr. Brandt who is teaching philosophy at an eastern college and is a keen observer of the German situation spoke on “Hitler’s Attitude toward Riligion and Sterilization.”

LINKS MOSES AND LINCOLN

A paralled between the lives and destinies of Moses and Lincolm was drawn by Sidney H. Reiss in a talk on “Moss an Lincoln-Liberators” over statio WBNX recently. Broadcasting under the auspices of the Young People’s League of the United Synagogue of America, Reiss spoke of Moses and Lincoln as champions of the lowly and the under priileged, showing a similarity not only of purposes in their lives but of experiences.

“What can we learn from lives so striking similar though separated by thousands of years? It implies that when th time arises the exploited will find a new leader to lead in th struggle to loose the shackles of physical and spiritual restriction and to lead us nearer to the glorious brotherhood of all men.”
