Belle Kaufman, 22 years old, was a member of the Hunter College graduating class. She received bighest honors.
The item would not be unusual but for the fact that Miss Kaufman’s grandfather is Sholom Aleichem, author of no mean fame. The young lady writes stories and many have been published in the Echo, college literary magazine. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, national honor fraternity, engages in dramaties, journalism and art, Her diploma was awarded magna cum laude.
Belle Kaufman’s family emigrated from Russia in 1924. Mrs. Kaufman, formerly Sarah Rabinowitz, a daughter of Sholom Aleichem, contributes short stories to the Jewish Daily Forward. Mr. Kaufman is a practicing Newark physician.
Both parents are writers. Miss Kaufman’s father writes poems and sketches and has a collection of sculpture work which he did as a hobby. When he left Russia the government asked Dr. Kaufman to get a permit if he wanted to take his carvings with him. They were classified as “works of art.”
At present Miss Kaufman is a graduate student at Columbia working for a master’s degree in English literature.
