The pamphlet makes public a letter which the Committee of Ten sent to President Roosevelt on January 24,urging that American consuls in Europe be instructed to give religious and political refugees sympathetic treatment.
The letter calls President Roosevelt’s attention to an executive order issued when Hoover was president which authorized the State Department to warn American consular officers to require definite proof that aliens applying for immigrantion visas will not become public charges here and thus add to an unemployment porblem.
The letter, signed “Committee of Ten” included the following names: Mrs. Catt,chairman; Miss Mary Dreier,Miss Elizabeth Eastman, Mrs.Kendall Emerson, Mrs.John H. Ffinley,Mrs.Alexander Kohut,Mrs.James Lees Laidlow,Mrs.Jacob A. Riis,Mrs.Charles Cary Rumsey and Mrs.F.Louis Slade.
Since the letter was sent,the Department of Labor has made provision to accept bonds to guarantee that immigrants admitted will not become public charges American consular officers in European countries have been ordred to give sympathetic consideration to applicants who desire to come to the United States to seek asylum.
