Speaking on “Municipal Housing and Slum Clearance” before a meeting of the Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations yesterday morning, at which more than 150 groups were represented, Tenement House Commissioner Langdon Post said: “The only answer for more than forty per cent of the 67,000 tenement house firetraps in the city is dynamite.”
Commissioner Post explained that many of the tenements were built during the period from 1860 to 1900 to take care of the hordes pouring into the city from all parts of the world. They were built on low standards and they have deteriorated much in this time, especially during the years of the depression.
“I come here to ask your help in sponsoring the new legislation which is to come up next week,” said Mr. Post.
The other speaker was Herman Bernstein, editor of the Jewish Daily Bulletin, who explained the significance and importance of a Jewish daily newspaper in English.
“Jews in America ought to keep fully informed on what is going on in the Jewish world. especially in storm centers,” Mr. Bernstein said.
Mrs. David E. Goldfarb, president of the Federation, presided. Mrs. Isaac Kubie, chairman of the membership group, reported that six new organizations had joined the 225 which are members of the Federation. Mrs. Moses Hyamson reported on Passover relief. Mrs. Edward M. Mayer, chairman of social service, and Mrs. A. J. Davidson, chairman of health work also reported.
