Albanian Minister Decorates Bernstein with King’s Award

Download PDF for this date

Herman Bernstein, former American Minister to Albania, was awarded the grand cordon of the Order of Skanderbeg by Faik Konitza, Albanian Minister to the United States, at a private luncheon yesterday in the Ritz Carlton Hotel.

The decoration was sent by King Zog I of Albania in recognition of Mr. Bernstein’s work in the promotion of the bonds of friendship between the two nations and of his popularity among the Albanians themselves. The former American diplomat expressed his admiration for the Albanian people and the King.

During the time Mr. Bernstein was stationed at Tirana, the capital of Albania, he negotiated and signed two treaties, one concerning the naturalization of immigrants, and the other concerning extradition. The latter treaty was instrumental in keeping Samuel Insull, the fugitive American financier, out of Albania, which borders on Greece.
