Nationalists Drive Against Brazil Jews

The Jewish population of this province is living in a state of continual terror owing to the bitter anti-Semitic campaign now in progress here. The anti-Semitic movement is directed by the Integralist party, whose leaders, Gustavo Barroso and Plinio Salgado, have been making open anti-Semitic speeches in a number of provincial cities, including Belohorizonte and Campos.

The leaders of the Integralists, which is a Fascist party, accuse the Jews of having crowded into Brazil in large numbers; of exploiting and enslaving the people; of teaching immoral practices to Brazilian youth, and of being responsible for war and revolution in Brazil.

The Integralists have stated openly that Sao Paulo is full of Jews and that the Fascists are determined to blow up the Sao Paulo Jewish Theatre. Recently a bomb was exploded in a Jewish school in this city which severely injured several Jewish children. Local police have made no efforts to interfere with the Integralists, despite their openly-avowed intention of blowing up the Jewish Theatre.

The Fascists say that they have learned their methods of combating the Jews from Germany. Austria and Cuba. Integralists carried out an attack on a group of Englishmen in the Terminus Hotel in Sao Paulo, who laughed at the Fascist uniform worn by Gustavo Barroso. They also carried out a raid on the premises of the humor paper, O Interventor, which poked fun at Brazilian Fascists. Despite the fact that the raiders were known to the police, no arrests were made.

The Jewish population, particularly in the cities of Nadler and Campos, is in a state bordering on panic and is demanding that open, energetic measures be taken against the Fascist anti-Semites.

The Integralists are utilizing the Catholic Holy Week to arouse sentiment against the Jews. basing their attacks on their on the story of the betrayal of Christ by Judas. Their propaganda is systematically organized and is making progress in the province.
