A meeting of the Anti-Semitic Association of Vienna, scheduled to be held today, was panned by the Dollfuss government. Vienna anti-Semites arriving at the hall for the meeting read the notice of the prohibition, which was posted in front of the hall, and left quietly. There was no disturbance of any kind.
The Austrian government also issued an order today forbidding the Pan – German Association, which of late has been disseminating Nazi anti-Semitic propaganda, to continue its activities. The organization was not dissolved.
These are the first steps that the Dollfuss regime has taken to halt the increasing flood of anti-Semitic propaganda in Austria. Whether this marks the beginning of a campaign against anti-Semitism in Austria is not clear.
The Austrian government has permitted the most flagrant and violent attacks on Jews in recent months. Jewish professionals have been the particular target of Austrian anti-Semites. At the same time the Christian Socialist party, to which Chancellor Dollfuss belongs, has taken the lead in demanding severe restrictions against Jews in public and professional life. Many schemes have also been advanced to restrict Jewish citizenship rights.
