For the first time in its history of more than two centuries, a conference of Jews and Christians will be held at Yale University. Five religious clubs in the institution, including the Catholic Club and the Jewish Club, are sponsoring the event, to be held April 20 and 21, with the cooperation of the National Conference of Jews and Christians.
“Common Citizenship” will be the theme of the conference, which will open April 20 at 3:00 p.m. in Dwight Hall, the headquarters of the Yale Christian Association. The opening session will consist of a “U-table” discussion, in which representatives of the Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish religions will discuss the problems involved in relations among these faiths. Each of the three religions will be called upon to give their views.
Those at the “U-table” will include Rev. Everett R. Clinchy, Executive Director, National Conference of Jews and Christians; Rabbi Morris Lazaron, Baltimore, Md.; Rev. Fr. Lorenzo C. McCarthy, president of Providence College; Professor John M. Mecklin, Department of Sociology. Dartmouth College; Mrs. Charles G. Morris, New Haven; Rabbi Louis L. Mann, Chicago Sinai Congregation, Chicago; Professor Alan C. Valentine, chairman of the Board of Admissions and Master of Pierson College, Yale University George N. Shuster. In the evening, a “triologue” will be held in Sprague Memorial Hall, which will be open to the public, as well as to members of the University. The speakers will be Rabbi Lazaron, Father McCarthy and Rev. McClinchy.
The conference will resume its sessions Saturday morning at 11 o’clock, when three group discussions will be held. One will be led by Dr. Isaac Rabinowitz, leader of the Jewish Club at Yale. who will speak on “Intolerance and Nationalism.” Another will be led by the Rev. Fr. T. Lawrason Riggs, Catholic Chaplain at Yale, whose subject will be “Intolerance and Creeds,” and a third by Rev. E. Fay Campbell, general secretary of the University Y. M. C. A., who will speak on “Intolerance and Yale.’ This will be followed by a luncheon, after which three Yale students, representing each religion, will give his impressions of the Conference. The Catholic speaker will be John D. J. Moore, ’35 Law, of Brooklyn; the Jewish speaker will be Avram A. Rosen, ’34, of New York City; and the Protestant speaker, Robert B. Birge, ’36, of Istanbul, Turkey.
