Baltimore (May. 22)
Representative Jews and Christians, including rabbis, judges and educators, attended a luncheon at the Southern Hotel today, given by Jacob Epstein in honor of Dr. Judah L. Magnes. The luncheon was attended by 150 persons.
Rabbi Morris S. Lazaron, of the Madison Avenue Temple, introduced Dr. Magnes, who traced the history of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, of which he is chancellor.
He dealt with the aims of the university, which he said had very limited means, and told of plans to establish a graduate school of medicine and hygiene.
Dr. Magnes stressed the university’s part in caring for refugee Jewish scientists and scholars from Germany, ten of whom already have been placed at the institution.
The chancellor pointed out the low salaries being paid professora at the Hebrew University, only two of whom get as much as $3,600 a year.
