Representatives of liberal organizations here joined in a protest against persecution of political prisoners, Communists. Socialists and Jews by the Nazis in Germany.
A. delegation of ten, headed by Mrs. Katharine L. Harris, secretary of the Philadelphia League Against War and Fascism, marched upon the offices of Arno P. Mowitz, German consul general here, at 1420 Walnut street, and presented a petition, which was received by a clerk in Mowclared in part:
“We demand the unconditional release of Ernst Thaelmann and of all political prisoners in Germany. We demand a stop to the persecution of Jews by the Hitler government, and complete cessation of all brutality committed against the German working class.”
The group insisted that Mowitz “immediately communicate these statements to the proper authorities for effective instant action, before new lives may be lost of new tortures committed.” The delegates left immediately after delivering the petition. There was no disorder, although six mounted and three foot policemen were on hand.
Signers of the petition were Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Emily Cope Johnson, state president, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom; Miss Mary Martin Gleason, of the Pioneer Youth Movement; Mrs. L. L. Beachboard, former secretary. Women’s International League Vincent Mullin. American Civil Liberties Union; Gordon Cooper, Swarthmore College; Miss Emme G. Gruner, of the Bureau of Municipal Research; Miss Sara Glantz, Miss Sara Rosenthal, Mrs. Philip Kind, Rabbi Feibelman and Herbert Syme.
