civil war in Austria, Herr von Papen, a devout Catholic who is considered an able diplomat, will leave for Vienna as soon as the new Austrian government approves his selection.

President Paul von Hindenburg, who is regarded as the real protector and patron of von Papen, approved the choice of his protege as special Minister to Austria and relieved him of his duties as Vice Chancellor.

Chancellor Hitler’s sudden move, which is regarded as a bid for peace with Austria and as a withdrawal from an untenable position, took European diplomats by surprise.
