A pamphlet attacking Hitler and Hitlerism as a menace to civilization has been issued by The Friends of the Truth, an organization of Cincinnati German-Americans, none of whose members, it is asserted, is Jewish. The pamphlet is signed by a publication committee composed of August Hamelberg, William Lohmeier, Fred Bender, John Wainz and August Hauck.
The brochure is entitled, “The Menace of Nazism,” and carries the explanatory sub-title, “As sober thinking German – Americans View Hitlerism.” An introduction states that the pamphlet “has been compiled by Cincinnatians of German extraction and one of its purposes is to bring home to all Cincinnatians of German origin that their first duty, at present, is to cooperate actively in keeping out of this country the maliciousness and unsavoriness of Nazi propaganda.”

An excerpt states: “To state the issues, as far as Cincinnatians are concerned, briefly and clearly: They must decide now. If they continue to have any relations at all with those organizations and their members that support Hitlerism, they make themselves accessories to the repellent crimes which have been committed, are being committed and will be committed in Germany and elsewhere by a gang of raving maniacs with no other purpose than to satisfy their lust for power and blood. The ‘Friends of New Germany,’ of course, are known to be, without any qualification whatsoever, part and parcel to the brutalities and murders perpetrated by their masters on the other side of the Atlantic.
“Worst of all and entirely in bondage to Nazism is the local German paper, the Freie Presse. This self-appointed guardian of all German contributions to the cultural life of America brazenly congratulated Germany on Hitler’s last series of mass murders.
‘FREIE PRESSE’ ATTACKED
“Let it be clearly understood that touching the untouchables— that is, associating openly or clandestinely with Nazi-ruled societies and concerns, is equivalent to condoning murder, corruption and filth. Let it be particularly clear, that German societies which in the future use the Freie Presse as their organ, which join in common activities with Nazi organizations, and which admit or retain members who belong to Nazi societies, are siding with forces subversive to the constitution of the United States and inimical to the welfare of their old and their new country. They must know that they will be judged accordingly by every American.”
