The Jewish Sabbath Alliance of America will renew its efforts to force the Board of Education to postpone the opening of New York’s public schools from September 10 to 12 because of the Jewish New Year, it was announced yesterday by William Rosenberg, executive secretary of the organization.
“We will not stop our campaign to have the schools closed for the New Year. As a last resort, we will appeal to all Jewish parents to keep their children from the schools should they be open during the Holy Days. We shall also ask Jewish teachers to absent themselves from their classrooms,” declared Rosenberg. This statement is a complete reversal of the stand expressed by him on July 25. He said then that the Alliance had decided to abandon its campaign.
Howard Shiebler, secretary to Dr. Harold G. Campbell, Superintendent of Schools, said yesterday that the State Legislature’s resolution “memoralizing” the Board of Superintendents to open the schools on September 12 had not yet been received by the board.
Mr. Shiebler said he believed that the schools will open on September 10. The Board of Superintendents, it is believed, will take no action on the Legislature’s recommendation.
