“I don’t justify the discrimination against Jews by many of our largest corporations and in the professions and I condemn with all my might the idea that Jews must impose a numerus clausus on their professional activity, limiting the number of Jews in professions to the proportion of the Jewish population to the general population. But I do feel we have too large a proportion of white collar men for our own good.”
This was the statement of Professor Simon Litman, teacher of economics at the University of Illinois for the past twenty-six years, who was a Seattle visitor this week.
“We need more Jewish laborers,” the savant declared. “I know that sounds a bit odd coming from me—a so-called white collar man. But we must realize that labor plays a more and more important role in life. And just because you are a laborer doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy good literature or grand opera.”
