From medieval times onwards, Morocco has been the scene of violent pogroms against the Jews. Jews have been living there since the time of the Romans, when the province was called Mauretania. With the Arab conquest of Morocco, the Jews were reduced to the lowest status, compelled to live in ghettos and wear distinctive clothes, and were exposed to the fury of the Mohammedan populace from time to time.
