Nazi forces in this country will conduct an intensive nation-wide campaign to raise funds to provide free trips to the Saar for citizens of that region now residing in the United States, so that they may vote in the January plebiscite to decide whether the Saar will be returned to Germany.
Plans for this drive came to light during an address before the Milwaukee chapter of the Friends of New Germany by Karl Sauter of Chicago, a member of the Saarlaender-Verein fuer Chicago und den Mittelwesten (the Saarlanders’ Association for Chicago and the Middle West).
Sauter told the “Friends” that the League of Nations governing body has given residents of other countries who have retained their Saar citizenship the right to vote in the plebiscite. He prophesied that thousands of Saarlanders throughout the world will return to the region to cast their ballots. They will make the trip either with their own money or with the aid of contributions, he said.
The Chicagoan denied that the Hitler government has allocated funds for the purpose of financing this project.
He bitterly assailed France for attempting to retain the Saar. “Seven-eighths of the Saar residents will vote to unite with the Reich,” he asserted. “The Socialists are in complete dissolution. They will vote with the common front for return to Germany.” The French and the Communists will be the only dissenters, he declared.
Copies of the forged and discredited Protocols of the Elders of Zion were sold at the meeting for $1 each. They were the brand of the Patriotic Publishing Company, Inc., of Chicago. Other anti-Semitic literature also was on sale.
Sauter appealed to all Saar citizens who were present to apply for membership in the Saarlander-Verein. He received several responses.
