While members of the Butcher Workers Union picketed the building with signs reading “don’t scab,” the New Deal Kosher Butcher Bosses Association yesterday signed non-union workers estimated at 300 at its office, 401 Broadway, in preparation for a city-wide strike which is expected to be declared when present contracts expire October 31.
The association includes market, market section and chain store butchers. It has refused to renew the old contracts on the ground, according to Louis Marcus, its attorney, that it denies to butchers the right to choose their own employees.
In a statement to newspapers issued by Nathan Silberman, president of the association, the union was charged with “double-crossing” the employers by failing to live up to a verbal agreement.
Joseph Belsky, secretary of the union, characterized the statement as “ridiculous.”
