A call for cooperation for the common good was issued last night by the Rt. Rev. John C. Farthing, Bishop of Montreal, who addressed a large dinner gathering of Temple Emanu-El Brotherhood in the Temple auditorium.
This is the first time in the annals of Canadian Jewry that a Christian Bishop has spoken in a synagogue on religion. Bishop Farthing’s address was entitled: “Religion—the Practical and Stabilizing Factor in Life.”
He praised the Montreal Jewish community for communal uplift work. “I congratulate Montreal Jewry upon their self-respecting independence in this city,” he said.
“I am not a pessimist,” Bishop Farthing stated, “but in Canada, as elsewhere, we are passing through a crisis and it behooves us to go through it with honor and victory.”
“What is needed is cooperation for the common good, for the world is crying for a restoration of confidence in all branches of endeavor. Nothing except living and practicing a righteous life can bring this about.”
The Bishop urged Canadian citizens to take the lead in this regard.
