A plea to “open Palestine for the poor as well as the rich,” was delivered today in the House of Commons by Colonel Josiah Wedgwood, Liberal M. P., and friend of Zionism.
The veteran Liberal questioned Colonial Secretary Sir Philip Cunliffe-Lister on the importation of German goods into Palestine by immigrants in the capitalist category who brought their capital with them in the form of German goods. He urged the Colonial Minister to “promote British trade with Palestine in the best British tradition.”
Sir Philip answered for the government that the extent of immigration to Palestine is determined by High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope and is based on the economic absorptive capacity of the country.
Barnett Janner, Jewish M. P., for Whitechapel, called the attention of Sir John Simon, British Foreign Secretary, to the ban on all Jewish papers set up by the Iraq government.
The Foreign Office, Sir John replied, has instructed the British Charge d’Affairs in Baghdad, to ascertain whether such a ban exists and what reason the government had for imposing a ban.
According to earlier reports, Jewish papers and even British, French and American newspapers commenting favorably to Zionism, have been banned in Iraq, where a strong anti-Semitic movement is in full swing.
