Nine Jewish Red Army officers were appointed to high posts in the newly-established military council in a decree issued today.

Jan Gomarnik was named first chief deputy Commissar for National Defense directly under Commissar Kelementi Voroshilov, while Jona Jakir was named commanderin-chief of the Ukrainian Red Army.

Gomarnik is the brother-in-law of the late Hebrew poet laureate, Chaim Nachman Bialik, who died last July in Vienna.

Seven other Jewish officers were named to high posts in the Red Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as members of the new council.

The task of the new council will be to advise the Commissariat of Defense on the coordination of all branches of the service.
